Our vision is for every employee of the City of Tacoma to believe that they belong here and to be able to bring their whole self to work each day.

Which version of your self do you bring to work each day?

Many people ask us how I Am Tacoma started and where it came from. A group of passionate employees got together one afternoon and began sharing dreams about how incredible it would be if our workplace was the kind of place where everyone came to work with the unique feeling that this is a place where they belong. What if individually, each of us can utter the phrase “I Am Tacoma” and unapologetically believe that it is our individual uniqueness that is appreciated and that contributes to making this city a great place?

Can we foster a greater sense of belonging?

The small group of employees recognized many different employee community groups existed at various levels of maturity across the City. Some of these groups had full functioning charters with rotating leadership and a clear vision, while others were just an idea shared by one or two employees. With a desire to find meaningful ways to further support employees in these community groups, it was also recognized that the annual calendar affords various opportunities to bring awareness to, educate, and/or celebrate the cultural history, heritage, experiences, or accomplishments, as well as the employees in these community groups.

We began trying to identify various months or days throughout the year that could be leveraged to encourage a greater awareness of the various community groups. Some of these groups host annual events that encourage all city staff to attend and others simply gather and share a meal and conversation with their peers. Knowing each group needs different things, our heart and intent has always been to provide support and encourage however we can by leveraging the time, talents, and resources of our small group.

Since the start of this idea the Tacoma City Council has passed Resolution 40622 and started the Transforming Tacoma initiative. All of these efforts encourage and support the systemic transformation of our workplace. In 2021, I Am Tacoma became recognized as a structural component of the Office of Equity and Human Rights. While the work continues to evolve and be shaped, this site is an extension of that desire to continue to provide tools and resources to support our employees and foster a culture of belonging for all employees. We know we are all on our own individual journey and we hope that you find one or more of the resources we have collected here, helpful for your journey!
